Richmond High School - First High School Orchestra

This plaque is located on the east wall of the hallway of McGuire Hall (Richmond Art Museum) in Richmond High School.  It reads:

A Landmark of American Music

Birthplace of the first high school orchestra in the public schools of the United States organized by Will Earhart in 1900.

"The group was organized originally as a mandolin, violin, and guitar section of a boy's glee club, but soon outgrew this subordinate function to become a genuine orchestra of small size."
