YWCA TO HOLD SECOND CHANCE PROM
Life seldom gives you a second chance, but the Richmond YWCA is offering you a second chance – to attend the YWCA’s Second Chance Prom!
The YWCA is excited to announce its 1st Annual Second Chance Prom scheduled for Saturday, October 15, 2005. The Prom is being held from 8 p.m. to 12 midnight at the 4th Floor Blues Club, 923 North “E” Street, Richmond. Tickets are $20.00 per person. Prom attire is suggested, casual wear is acceptable.
“Community support has been tremendous,” said Becky Studebaker, executive director of the YWCA. “Kicks 96 radio station is helping us with a Second Chance Prom contest where the grand prize winner will receive two prom outfits from Chic Unique, limousine service provided by Cooper Limousine, and a $50.00 gift certificate for dinner at the Olde Richmond Inn. Chic Unique is also offering sale prices on prom attire to anyone shopping for the prom.”
The night of the prom promises to be a fun filled evening. We will go back in time with a chance to enter the King and Queen contest, sponsored by Kings Title & Abstract; and you will be able to remember the evening forever with your photo by Bond Photography.
Proceeds from the Second Chance Prom will benefit the YWCA campaign to raise $360,000 to retire the mortgage on the Genesis Shelter and to support YWCA programs.

HARRY POTTER is Coming to RCT!
Richmond Civic Theatre will present the HARRY POTTER film trilogy, on October 28th and 29th. HARRY POTTER AND THE SORCERER’S STONE will start at 7:30 P.M. on Friday, October the 28th. Then, on Saturday the 29th, HARRY POTTER AND THE CHAMBER OF SECRETS will be shown at 3:30 P.M., with HARRY POTTER AND THE PRISONER OF AZKABAN beginning at 7:30 P.M.. Admission for each show is $2.50 per person, with a special admission price of $1 for anyone under the age of 18 attending the performance in their Halloween costume. All three screenings are sponsored by Primex Plastics, and will be at the historic Richmond Civic Theatre.
Harry Potter is a young, awkward orphaned boy who, upon his 11th birthday, discovers he comes from a family of wizards, and has been accepted to the Hogwarts School of Wizardry. Once at the school, Harry finds he finally fits in somewhere, as there are dozens of students who also possess amazing abilities. Like any young schoolboy, Harry eventually encounters the class bully, Draco Malfoy, but with the help of his friends, the Weasley brothers and a young girl named Hermione, most of the magical mischief ends in mere misadventure. Far more threatening is the menace from an allegedly dead wizard named Voldemort, who cannot rest until the last member of the Potter family has been destroyed. All this, and final exams, threaten the friends, whose adventures have quickly become contemporary classics among fantasy fans.
Based on the best-selling books by J.K. Rowling, the story of Harry Potter almost pales compared to the story behind Harry Potter. Joanna Rowling was an out of work single mother when she began to put her ideas about a young wizard down on paper, writing out the manuscript in longhand during visits to a local coffee shop. After spending six years developing the first installment, Rowling was turned down by nine publishers before the book was finally optioned by Bloomsbury Publishing, of London. As she signed the contract, the author was told not to expect to make much money writing children’s books, and that she should use her initials rather than her first name, for fear boys would be reluctant to read something written by a woman. Harry Potter soon became a publishing phenomenon, making J.K. Rowling one of the world’s richest women.
The HARRY POTTER trilogy is the 24th presentation of the C. Francis Jenkins Film Society of Richmond Civic Theatre. Future film showings include THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK on November 18th and 19th, Walt Disney’s PINOCCHIO on November 25th and 26th, and TOP HAT on December 31st and January 1st.
Richmond Civic Theatre recently acquired its full-sized movie screen from the old Tivoli Theater, thanks to the generosity of Hoppe Jewelers. Additional thanks are due to Primex Plastics Corporation, The Delta Entertainment Music Corporation, David and Cheri Jetmore, Ernest & Betty Mills of Doan & Mills Funeral Home, Steven and Margery Stoller, Dr. Deborah Wehman of Richmond Podiatry, and Censor Security Systems, who provided funding for the purchase of a new video projector for the Film Society. Donations to purchase video equipment will be accepted at each film series offering. Richmond Civic Theatre will present the best of Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck and Porky Pig on Friday November 25th and Saturday November 26th, beginning at 7:30 P.M.. Admission for each show is $2.50 per person. Both showings are sponsored by the Morrisson-Reeves Library, and will be at the historic Richmond Civic Theatre.
With “Turkey Season” upon us, it’s time to join the eternally frustrated Elmer Fudd for Duck Season and Rabbit Season in a two-hour carnival of classic cartoons. For the first time in years, audiences young and old can laugh at the LOONEY TUNES on the big screen the way they were originally intended to be seen. While mom and dad might be tempted to drop their children off while they do some Christmas shopping, chances are they’ll enjoy Bugs, Daffy and Porky as much as the kids! While the LOONEY TUNES have long been a staple of Saturday morning cartoons; that was a far cry from their original outlet. Made back in the days when going to the movies was an event and an evening’s entertainment wasn’t just one film, but a double feature and a selection of shorts, the misadventures of Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck were intended to be as entertaining to adults as they were their children. Now, the Richmond Civic Theatre is proud to allow families to share the fun together once again.
The LOONEY TUNES festival is the 26th presentation of the C. Francis Jenkins Film Society of Richmond Civic Theatre. Future film showings will include TOP HAT on December 31st and January 1st.
Richmond Civic Theatre recently acquired its full-sized movie screen from the old Tivoli Theater, thanks to the generosity of Hoppe Jewelers. Richmond Civic Theatre will present the 1959 film release of the DIARY OF ANNE FRANK, on November 18th and 19th at 7:30 P.M. Admission for the show is free of charge, as it is being sponsored by the Wayne County Foundation as part of The Ripple Effect, a year-long effort to promote literacy via the arts. Both screenings will be at the historic Richmond Civic Theatre at 10th and Main.
DIARY OF ANNE FRANK was directed by George Stevens, who had been deeply moved by experiences filming the liberation of the Dachau concentration camp. Stevens had directed other significant projects such as Giant, Shane, Gunga Din, and A Place in the Sun. The title role was first offered to Audrey Hepburn, who turned it down because she had lived in German-occupied Holland during the war, and felt that reliving those memories during filming would be too painful. The casting search for the role of Anne Frank included several thousand girls, and finally 19-year-old Millie Perkins was selected and made her film debut.
It is important to note that there were several aspects of Anne Frank’s original diary that were toned down before publication of the book. Her father Otto, the lone survivor of the group in hiding, was heavily pressured to remove several references to Judaism and the Nazi’s in the editing process. The story was further sanitized in the play Diary of Anne Frank by Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett, but was still powerful enough to win a Pulitzer Prize. Even more editing took place in the production of the film version, but “Diary” still emerges as a timelessly powerful story.
Richmond Civic Theatre recently acquired its full-sized movie screen from the old Tivoli Theater, thanks to the generosity of Hoppe Jewelers. More information regarding the RCT Film Series is available by calling 962-8011.

Star-Gennett Foundation Implements Recent Recommendations
Although the Starr-Gennett Foundation is just finishing up its project with the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s Heritage Tourism Program, the Foundation has already begun to implement the National Trust’s recommendations. The project is produced in cooperation with the Indiana Office of Tourism Development through the Lt. Governors' Quality of Place Initiative (QPI). On November 8th, Amy Jordan Webb, the Heritage Tourism Program Director, presented a summary of recommendations that will be included in the final version of a feasibility study for a tourism attraction rooted in Richmond’s historic Starr-Gennett legacy. The final version will be available within the next two weeks. For the past year, Webb has been leading a team of consultants with expertise in tourism research, music attractions, economic development, and heritage tourism who contributed to the feasibility study.
Amy Webb outlined two definite (and one optional) phases for implementation of the study’s recommendations. The first phase includes the following components:
Hometown Gallery Features Gifts with Local Interest
Located at 181 Ft. Wayne Avenue, the Hometown Gallery is open for business. Featuring eleven Wayne County non-profits, including the Wayne County Historical Museum, Nettle Creek Valley Museum, Cope Environmental Center, Starr-Gennett Foundation, Joseph Moore Museum, Civic Hall Performing Arts Center, Preserve Richmond, Main Street Richmond-Wayne County, Overbeck Museum, Indiana National Road Association, and the Indiana Football Hall of Fame, the store features gift items from each organization as well as items from several local crafters. Items range from books about Wayne County and CDs of reissued Gennett Records to butterfly nets and Historic National Road commemorative road signs. The Hometown Gallery is open on Tuesdays from 5-9 pm, Fridays from 5-8 pm, and Saturdays from 10 am – 8 pm from now until Christmas.
Little Sheba’s owner, Steve Terzini, kindly agreed to share the space next to Zini’s Place for the holiday season with the Starr-Gennett Foundation and other organizations. Terzini had already agreed to let several local crafters sell items in the space, and local business Olympian Candies is also selling goodies in the store. One of the crafters, Serendipitous Designs, will host two open houses at the Hometown Gallery on December 11th and December 18th. Each open house will last from 12-4 pm.
Tuesday evenings, the Hometown Gallery will be open for the Old-Fashioned Christmas Festival in the historic Depot District. The Old-Fashioned Christmas Festival will feature carriage rides, special sales at Depot District businesses, the Christmas Train Fantasyland at Charlie’s Coffee Bar and Gallery, and festive refreshments at each store.
The Starr-Gennett Foundation led efforts to bring Wayne County groups together as the first step to implement the recommendations of a feasibility study for a tourist attraction in Richmond rooted in the Starr-Gennett legacy. The study is currently being completed by the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s Heritage Tourism Program and is produced in cooperation with the Indiana Office of Tourism Development through the Lt. Governors' Quality of Place Initiative (QPI). In the feasibility study, the National Trust indicates that collaboration with area organizations will be crucially important to the success of a Starr-Gennett tourism attraction and recommends that the Foundation work on greater visibility for its line of merchandise, which includes CDs, books, videos, shirts, posters, and more. The Hometown Gallery offers the Foundation the opportunity to do both. Through its partnership in the Wayne County Cultural Alliance and the Whitewater Valley Arts Fusion, the Starr-Gennett Foundation was able to get eleven local organizations to participate.
Contact the Starr-Gennett Foundation at (765) 962-1511 for more information about the Hometown Gallery.
