Rear Window at RCT!

Richmond Civic Theatre will present two showings of director Alfred Hitchcock’s 1954 suspense classic, REAR WINDOW, on August 26th and 27th. Each showing will begin at 7:30 p.m., with an admission price of $2.50 per person. Both screenings are sponsored by Greg Pyle Photography, and will be at the historic Richmond Civic Theatre.

Perhaps never in the history of the movies has a film so earnestly and successfully attempted to draw audiences into the story as does REAR WINDOW. This masterpiece of intrigue takes us into the world of L.B. Jefferies, played by Jimmy Stewart, an action photographer whose last assignment resulted in a badly broken leg. While laid up in his Greenwich Village apartment, he deals with his boredom by spying on the activities of all his courtyard neighbors. In doing so, he gets drawn into a suspected case of murder, where only he has witnessed the clues to solve the crime.

The film is shot entirely from the confines of his apartment, mostly from his point of view, which required the biggest set ever constructed on the Paramount lot up to that time. With the audience having a common frame of reference to Stewart throughout, sensing his confinement and sharing in his voyeurism, with even the music of the movie coming from within the film itself, it is easy for any viewer to believe they are living the story themselves. This despite the fact that Stewart spends the better part of the story trying to fend off the marital intentions of Grace Kelly!

REAR WINDOW is the 22nd presentation of the C. Francis Jenkins Film Society of Richmond Civic Theatre. Future film showings include AMERICAN GRAFFITI on September 23rd and 24th, the HARRY POTTER trilogy on October 28th and 29th, THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK on November 18th and 19th, Walt Disney’s PINOCCHIO on November 25th and 26th, and TOP HAT on December 31st and January 1st.

Richmond Civic Theatre recently acquired its full-sized movie screen from the old Tivoli Theater, thanks to the generosity of Hoppe Jewelers. Additional thanks are due to Primex Plastics Corporation, The Delta Entertainment Music Corporation, David and Cheri Jetmore, Ernest & Betty Mills of Doan & Mills Funeral Home, Steven & Margery Stoller, Dr. Deborah Wehman of Richmond Podiatry, and Censor Security Systems, who provided funding for the purchase of a new video projector for the Film Society. AMERICAN GRAFFITI at RCT!

Richmond Civic Theatre will present George Lucas’ classic of contemporary Americana, AMERICAN GRAFFITI, on September 23rd and 24th. Each showing will begin at 7:30 P.M.. Admission is $2.50 per person. Both screenings are sponsored by Benchmark Graphics Inc., and will be at the historic Richmond Civic Theatre. Adding to the drive-in atmosphere of the evening, on Friday the 23rd, will be a “Classic Car Cruise-In” taking place in the city parking lot across the street from Richmond Civic Theatre, beginning at 6:30. Hamburgers and hotdogs will be available right off the grill, with donations from the event going to the Ripple Effect.

Set in 1962, AMERICAN GRAFFITI is a look at the last night a group of high school buddies spend together before going off to college, following them as they say goodbye to each other, their girlfriends and the small town life they know. The bittersweet comedy blends music, romance and nostalgia with an incredible cast, including Richard Dreyfuss, Ron Howard, Cindy Williams, Harrison Ford and legendary DJ Wolfman Jack.

Written and directed by a pre-STAR WARS George Lucas, 1973’s AMERICAN GRAFFITI was the future movie mogul’s second feature. Although an instant hit at the box office (and the inspiration for television’s HAPPY DAYS, which even cast two of the film’s stars), GRAFFITI was almost locked away before being released. At a test screening, a Universal Studios representative felt the film was not commercial enough, in spite of the enthusiasm of the audience. Producer Francis Ford Coppola confronted the executive, offering to buy the rights from Universal right on the spot. Universal relented and released the film, quickly tripling their investment. Made in 29 days, during June and August of 1972, the film was made for under $800,000. In an unusual move, Lucas shot the movie in sequence, so that as the actors grew tired during the course of the production, they would appear more tired as the night progressed onscreen.

AMERICAN GRAFFITI is the 23rd presentation of the C. Francis Jenkins Film Society of Richmond Civic Theatre. Future film showings include the HARRY POTTER trilogy on October 28th and 29th, THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK on November 18th and 19th, Walt Disney’s PINOCCHIO on November 25th and 26th, and TOP HAT on December 31st and January 1st.

Donations to purchase video equipment will be accepted at each film series offering. Richmond, Indiana Destination Workshops rescheduled for September 21-23

RICHMOND, Indiana, September 6 --- Ask any real estate developer what makes a business successful and you’re likely to hear: “Location, location, location”. This works well if a business is located in a major city surrounded by a large population. Unfortunately, success has been less certain for businesses in less-populated cities or rural small towns.

But now, small business owners are marketing themselves differently, capitalizing on today’s fickle consumers, and “reinventing” themselves into “consumer destinations”, all of which makes a prime location no longer a necessity, according to marketing consultant Jon Schallert.

“Location, location, location doesn’t have to matter any more,” said Schallert. “Never before has a small business owner had more marketing tools at their disposal to create consumer preference, attract consumers’ dollars, and alter the very make-up of their local economies by pulling customers from outside their demographic area.”

Schallert will visit Richmond, Indiana September 21-23 to conduct three “Destination Business” workshops designed to help small business owners learn his “Destination” teachings, and instruct government and civic leaders on improving their communities’ retail marketplaces using his same techniques. These dates are rescheduled times for his seminars, which had to be moved from August 15-17.

"We look forward to welcoming small business owners and leaders from their cities to Richmond to hear Jon’s unique marketing strategies. Jon’s principles help small businesses thrive, while improving both large and small business districts,” said Renee Oldham, Executive Director, Main Street Richmond-Wayne County.

Schallert first began learning about consumer destinations with greeting card giant Hallmark Cards, where he worked for ten years. Schallert then left Hallmark, started his own consulting firm, and began conducting seminars on these marketing strategies, averaging 60 to 80 cities per year. Today, Schallert still travels the country extensively, teaching and always learning new techniques from the small businesses he is assisting. He also conducts a two-day “Destination Business BootCamp” in Orlando and Portland, Oregon for owners wanting a more extensive training.

One owner who attended Schallert’s BootCamp was Tracy Hurt, owner of Mary Ellen’s Florist in Mooresville, North Carolina. “For years, I was taught that location was the most important aspect of a business. I learned that was wrong,” Hurt said. “I always wanted to move to a free-standing location, and after working with Jon, I had the tools to be able to do it, and maintain my sales. I moved from a traditional shopping center to a free-standing downtown building that had less consumer traffic, but was 10% larger. Overnight, I experienced a drop in overhead expenses of 60%, yet I lost none of the sales, using Schallert’s tools. I continue to build the sales of the business today.”

Another advocate of Schallert’s teachings is Greg Ehresman, owner of the Triple X Restaurant in Lafayette, Indiana. “We found that when we started using Schallert’s techniques and marketing our business as a destination, customers easily would spend 30-40% more on their average transaction than local customers,” said Ehresman. “They often come from hundreds of miles away, and are excited to buy our cups, mugs, t-shirts, hats, and cases of bottled Triple X Root Beer, when they leave. Marketing as a destination is a smart move for any business.”

“Sinatra sang if he could make it in New York, he could make it anywhere. That’s a lie,” says Schallert. “When an owner creates a successful business in a less-populated or rural area, that owner has had to use the principles of a destination, which take much greater creativity and marketing savvy.”

All of Schallert’s workshops will be held at the Uptown Innovation Center, 814 East Main Street in downtown Richmond.

Wednesday, September 21, 5:30-7:00 p.m. “Increasing Sales and Marketing with Destination Marketing”. This is Schallert’s introductory session. The pre-registration admission cost is $25.

Thursday, September 22, 8:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., “Change the Business You Own Into the Business You Want: The Powerful, Painless, No-Excuse Method Using Destination Business Reinvention“. This session is for anyone wanting to understand how to create an annual marketing strategy using Schallert’s teachings. “Attendees will learn how to keep local consumers spending their money at home, while attracting consumers from outside their immediate marketplace," said Schallert. Pre-registration price for this session is $85

Friday, September 23, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., “Destination Creation Workshop”. This session focuses on retail recruitment, retail retention, and turning a marketplace into a retail destination. This session is typically attended by downtown development professionals, economic development directors, city officials, and chamber of commerce members. The pre-registration admission is $199.

Registration for each session may be made online at Schallert’s website at www.JonSchallert.com, by calling Schallert’s office at 352-383-9579, or 765-962-8151.

Schallert has worked with independent business owners since 1983 and is President of The Schallert Group, Inc., Sorrento, Florida. He publishes the monthly newsletter “Destination Business” and is a member of the International Downtown Association and the National Main Street Network. One newspaper called Schallert “the marketing guru rooting for the retail underdogs”.
