STAR WARS comes to RCT!
Richmond Civic Theatre will present the original STAR WARS trilogy, starting April 22 and continuing on April 23.
The 1977 classic, STAR WARS, will be shown that Friday, at 7:30 p.m.. On Saturday, THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK will begin at 4:30 p.m., followed by THE RETURN OF THE JEDI at 7:30 p.m.. Admission to each film is $2.50 per person, and each showing will be preceded by a live light saber demonstration onstage. The epic fantasy marathon is sponsored by the Audio-Visual Services department of the Morrisson-Reeves Library, and will be at the historic Richmond Civic Theatre.
STAR WARS broke all records for attendance and ticket sales upon its initial release in May of 1977. In a time when most movies rarely played for more than two weeks on their initial run, director George Lucas’s intergalactic epic was held over for months due to popular demand, forever changing Hollywood’s attitude toward science fiction and fantasy. The cosmic classic quickly became a multi-million dollar franchise, spawning sequels and merchandise on such a scale that STAR WARS was a genre unto itself. The groundbreaking special effects, and Lucas’s dedication to improving the technology of motion pictures, started an evolution in the film industry that is still in effect today.
Before each installment of the trilogy, Richmond Civic Theatre audiences will be treated to a live, onstage duel with light sabers, the sword-like laser weapons used by the Jedi Knights in the films. Swordsmen David Free and Chuck Wonsik will join martial arts expert Garon Bailey and his daughter, Jennifer Taylor, in the fencing demonstration. The quartet gave an exhibition of broadsword and quarterstaff fighting in conjunction with Richmond Civic Theatre’s presentation of Errol Flynn’s THE ADVENTURES OF ROBIN HOOD last year. Bailey has studied both Japanese and European fencing techniques, a blend of which was developed for use in the STAR WARS films.
The STAR WARS saga is the 18th presentation of the C. Francis Jenkins Film Society of Richmond Civic Theatre. Future film showings include SUNSET BOULEVARD on May 27th and 28th, YANKEE DOODLE DANDY on July 1st and 2nd, JAWS on July 29th and 30th, REAR WINDOW on August 26th and 27th, AMERICAN GRAFFITI on September 23rd and 24th, the HARRY POTTER trilogy on October 28th and 29th, THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK on November 18th and 19th, Walt Disney’s PINOCCHIO on November 25th and 26th, and TOP HAT on December 31st and January 1st.
Richmond Civic Theatre recently acquired its full-sized movie screen from the old Tivoli Theater, thanks to the generosity of Hoppe Jewelers. Additional thanks are due to Primex Plastics Corporation, The Delta Entertainment Music Corporation, David and Cheri Jetmore, Ernest & Betty Mills of Doan & Mills Funeral Home, Steven & Margery Stoller, Dr. Deborah Wehman of Richmond Podiatry, and Censor Security Systems, who provided funding for the purchase of a new video projector for the Film Society. Donations to purchase video equipment will be accepted at each film series offering. The City of Richmond will kick-off its city-wide Spring Clean Up Blitz on Saturday, April 16th. The clean up will take place in the Vaile Neighborhood and the area south of South E. Street between Liberty Avenue and South 23rd Street. The clean up blitz will continue in a different section of the city each Saturday through June 11th –except for Memorial Day weekend.
The clean up weekends provide an opportunity for the City to work with residents to help improve our community by sprucing up our neighborhoods.
“It’s important that we all pitch in to help make Richmond a beautiful place to live. A clean city helps build a better economy, reduces crime and builds community pride,” states Mayor Sally Hutton.
On each Saturday, Richmond Sanitary workers will go through the designated clean up areas and provide curb-side and alley pick up of trash and debris. The Sanitary District is also providing large dumpsters for the city’s neighborhood associations who are organizing neighborhood-wide clean ups during the blitz.
The Richmond Landfill will be open on Saturdays from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on clean up weekends for the disposal of household hazardous waste, tires, and freon units. Residents can take their household hazardous waste and four tires per household to the landfill for free disposal. The landfill will dispose of freon units, such as refrigerators and air conditioners, at a cost of $35.00 per unit.
On the week following each clean up, the Richmond Street Department will have its street sweepers out brushing away all of the gravel and dirt that have collected in the city streets over the winter.
For information on when the clean up will take place in your area, please contact the Richmond Sanitary District at 765-983-7450.

Riverside Romp - Part II
Saturday (4-23-04) afternoon's soggy weather discouraged the faint of heart but not the stalwarts from SPUR (Society for Preservation and Use of Resources). The fashion of the day for the dozen or so workers that showed up was old clothes, work gloves and work shoes.
The work session scheduled at the newly acquired Riverside Trail property was intended to allow trail enthusiasts from our community to become directly involved in preparing this site between North 12th Street and North 17th Street for public access.
Primary work planned was to distribute and spread wood chip mulch along the one half mile long trail. Rain and spitting snow kept the turn out low but the there was no lack of enthusiam.
While it was too wet to spread mulch along the trail major progress was made picking up and loading discarded vehicle tires. Two truck loads of discarded vehicle tires were gathered up and stacked into trucks for removal.
Another session has been scheduled for next Saturday afternoon, April 30, from 1PM to 4PM at the west trail head near Riverside Auto Sales.

PAINTINGS BY ARTISTS OF WAYNE COUNTY, INDIANA FEATURED ON WEB SITE
Artists of Wayne County URL: www.waynet.org/ency/artist/
Wayne County, Indiana produced a wealth of nationally recognized artists during the last 150 years. Some of these artists are widely collected, while it proves difficult to locate samples of other’s work. In an effort to educate both local citizens and the art world as to the contributions of this talented group, a web site has been created to share information about these artists and images of some of their art.
The artists included on the web site, entitled “Artists of Wayne County”, include George Herbert Baker, Edgar Forkner, John Elwood Bundy, Edna Stubbs Cathell, Charles Conner, Maude Eggemeyer, William Eyden Sr., William Eyden Jr., Frank Girardin, Marcus Mote, William Alden Mote, Overbeck Sisters, John Seaford, and Gaar Williams.
A short biography of each artist, researched and written by Richmond Art Museum Executive Director, Shaun Dingwerth, is included, along with several samples of each artist’s work.
The site includes images from the collections of the Cambridge City Library, Earlham College, Morrisson-Reeves Library, Quaker Hill Conference Center, Richmond Art Museum, Richmond Community Schools and the Wayne County Historical Museum.
Creation of this site was due to the generosity of a grant from the Wayne County Foundation along with the collaboration of Morrisson-Reeves Library, Earlham College, Richmond Art Museum, Wayne County Historical Museum and WayNet.org. Our vision is that this will be the beginning of a comprehensive “Encyclopedia” featuring the history of Wayne County. The site is hosted by WayNet.org.
Extensive information about the Richmond/Wayne County community can be found at WayNet.org. Additional examples of information found on WayNet.org include a community calendar, links to businesses, schools, and government entities, historical information, a local discussion list and much more. Photos from Greens Fork Schools Now Available on the Internet
Thanks to the generosity of Lois and Jim Charles, the Charles Collection of school photos from Greens Fork School, circa 1938 though 1942, are now available for viewing on WayNet.org.

This wonderful collection of class photos is a fascinating glimpse into another era. Those who are from the Clay Township, Wayne County, Indiana area will no doubt enjoy locating family and friends in the photos. Far-flung relatives doing genealogy research will have an additional resource for filling out their family tree.
Local residents without any ties to the Greens Fork area will also find the photos of interest as they provide a time capsule into another age and place. The differences in clothing and hair styles, class size, and school layout are obvious, but it’s also easy to see the similarities in humanity as you pick out the class favorite, the class bully, the class clown, the cliques, etc. These photos would be a fun starting point for a class writing or storytelling project.
WayNet.org has extensive information about the entire Richmond/Wayne County community, in addition to information about Greens Fork. RCT Presents a Yankee Doodle Double Feature!
For Immediate Release: June 22, 2005:
Richmond Civic Theatre will present a star-spangled double feature of HOPPITY GOES TO TOWN and YANKEE DOODLE DANDY, on July 1st and 2nd. Each showing will begin with cartoons at 6:00 p.m., followed by the first feature, HOPPITY at 6:30 and YANKEE DOODLE at approximately 7:30. Admission is $2.50 per person. Both screenings are sponsored by the Morrisson-Reeves Library, and will be at the historic Richmond Civic Theatre.
1941’s HOPPITY GOES TO TOWN is credited as the first animated musical feature, and follows a group of grasshoppers and their friends as they go in search of a new home when the vacant lot they live in is threatened. Originally released as MR. BUG GOES TO TOWN, HOPPITY was the second animated feature from brothers Max and Dave Fleischer, who had delighted Depression-era audiences with their Popeye, Betty Boop and Superman cartoons. The film opened just three days before the attack on Pearl Harbor, which devastated both the box office and American morale as the country was plunged into World War II. Hoosier Hoagy Carmichael contributed to the film’s soundtrack; the Bloomington-born tunesmith providing the tunes crooned in the cartoon. Carmichael also recorded for Richmond’s Gennett Records throughout the 1920s, having made his first recordings in Richmond in 1925 with the Evansville band, Hitch’s Happy Harmonists, and his first recording of his legendary song, “Stardust,” in 1927.
What would the 4th of July be without Jimmy Cagney in the Academy Award-winning 1942 classic, YANKEE DOODLE DANDY? Directed by the legendary Michael Curtiz, with uncredited contributions to the script by brothers Julius and Philip Epstein (who reteamed with Curtiz that same year for CASABLANCA), the film depicts the life of America’s amazing song and dance man, George M. Cohan. After Fred Astaire turned down the starring role, it was Cohan himself who selected Cagney to portray him. (Cagney would go on to reprise the part in 1955’s THE SEVEN LITTLE FOYS.) Although YANKEE DOODLE DANDY was the first feature film to undergo the colorization process, the Richmond Civic Theatre is proud to present the picture in its original, glorious black & white.
YANKEE DOODLE DANDY is the 20th presentation of the C. Francis Jenkins Film Society of Richmond Civic Theatre. Future film showings include JAWS on July 29th and 30th, REAR WINDOW on August 26th and 27th, AMERICAN GRAFFITI on September 23rd and 24th, the HARRY POTTER trilogy on October 28th and 29th, THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK on November 18th and 19th, Walt Disney’s PINOCCHIO on November 25th and 26th, and TOP HAT on December 31st and January 1st.
Richmond Civic Theatre recently acquired its full-sized movie screen from the old Tivoli Theater, thanks to the generosity of Hoppe Jewelers. Additional thanks are due to Primex Plastics Corporation, The Delta Entertainment Music Corporation, David and Cheri Jetmore, Ernest & Betty Mills of Doan & Mills Funeral Home, Steven and Margery Stoller, Dr. Deborah Wehman of Richmond Podiatry, and Censor Security Systems, who provided funding for the purchase of a new video projector for the Film Society.
