BEN-HUR races into RCT!

Richmond Civic Theatre will present two showings of the 1959 epic, BEN-HUR, on March 18th and 19th. Each showing will begin at 7:30 p.m., with an admission price of $2.50 per person. Both screenings are sponsored by David & Peggy Rokosz of Richmond Apothecary, and will be at the historic Richmond Civic Theatre.

BEN-HUR is based on the novel by Brookville, Indiana native Lew Wallace. A Civil War general, Wallace lived a life as adventurous as that of his fictional hero, Judah Ben-Hur. Even in peacetime, Wallace was a man of achievement, serving as governor of New Mexico, later as a U.S. senator and even as an ambassador to Turkey. The first film version of Wallace’s novel, made in 1907, was an unauthorized adaptation, resulting in an historical lawsuit that established the right of writers to compensation when their work was used in the new medium of the motion picture.

MGM’s Biblical spectacle, starring Charlton Heston, was the studio’s second version of the classic tale, having first filmed the story as a lavish silent production in 1925. Probably best remembered for its climactic chariot race, BEN-HUR almost had a different face. Before Heston was cast in the title role, the part had been offered to—and turned down by—such stars as Burt Lancaster, Paul Newman and Rock Hudson. BEN-HUR remains a powerful presentation, and was the first of only three films to ever receive a record-breaking 11 Academy Awards. (To date, only 1997’s TITANIC and 2003’s LORD OF THE RINGS: RETURN OF THE KING have matched that number.)

BEN-HUR is the 17th presentation of the C. Francis Jenkins Film Society of Richmond Civic Theatre. Future film showings include the original STAR WARS trilogy on April 22nd and 23rd, SUNSET BOULEVARD on May 27th and 28th, YANKEE DOODLE DANDY on July 1st and 2nd, JAWS on July 29th and 30th, REAR WINDOW on August 26th and 27th, AMERICAN GRAFFITI on September 23rd and 24th, the HARRY POTTER trilogy on October 28th and 29th, THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK on November 18th and 19th, Walt Disney’s PINOCCHIO on November 25th and 26th, and TOP HAT on December 31st and January 1st.

Richmond Civic Theatre recently acquired its full-sized movie screen from the old Tivoli Theater, thanks to the generosity of Hoppe Jewelers. Additional thanks are due to Primex Plastics Corporation, The Delta Entertainment Music Corporation, David and Cheri Jetmore, Ernest & Betty Mills of Doan & Mills Funeral Home, Steven & Margery Stoller, Dr. Deborah Wehman of Richmond Podiatry, and Censor Security Systems, who provided funding for the purchase of a new video projector for the Film Society. Donations to purchase video equipment will be accepted at each film series offering. More information regarding RCT Film Series sponsorship and advertising opportunities is available by calling (765) 962-8011.
