Achieva Resources are hosting a 5K Run/Walk on March 27th at 11 a.m. The event will take place at the Glen Miller Park. Each runner/walker will receive a t-shirt and water bottle. The cost is $15. Wayne County Youth Summit
On January 31, 2004, Youth As Resources will host a Youth Summit, "Do More in 2004", for all middle school and high school youth. The Youth Summit, planned by YAR youth board members, will be held from 9:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. at Centerville High School. In addition to being a five year celebration of Youth As Resources, the purpose of the Summit is to get youth involved in service to the community, to give them the skills and connections to do so, and to recognize youth who are making a positive difference in their communities. The day will begin with Tim Scales, First Bank Richmond, featured as the opening keynote speaker, followed by seven educational and motivational workshops offered during three workshop sessions. In the afternoon, all past YAR projects and youth participants will be recognized. Rick Thalls, Richmond Police Officer, will be the closing speaker. A celebration of youth accomplishments with music, luau, activities, and prizes will be held from 4:00-6:00 p.m. Youth may preregister by calling Youth As Resources at (765) 939-1808 or on the YAR web site www.yarwayne.org. There is no fee for youth to attend.
Ivy Tech State College Announces African American History Celebration Plans
Plans for African American History Celebration, 2004 are underway at Ivy Tech State College in Richmond/Connersville. Two Richmond citywide events are planned and will feature two distinguished gentlemen as keynote speakers. These events are open to the public.
Ivy Tech and the local NAACP Chapter will co-sponsor a banquet to be held on January 29, 2004, 6:30 p.m., at the Townsend Community Center. The keynote speaker for the evening will be Bill Goins. Mr. Goins, from Rushville, Indiana, is the State Vice President of the NAACP, and also serves as a State Trustee for Ivy Tech State College. “Renewing the Commitment” is the title of his presentation and refers to the commitment of community to the NAACP mission.
According to Vagas Ferguson, local NAACP chair, “We are pleased to work with Ivy Tech to bring an outstanding statewide leader and speaker to Richmond for the banquet. The local chapter of NAACP is still active in supporting the community as a whole and Bill Goins’ presentation will encourage involvement by a larger group of people.”
“Bill has been a leader in the College for several years and now serves as Vice Chair of the State Trustees for Ivy Tech State College. I’ve heard him speak on several occasions and know his presentation will be motivational and thought provoking,” said Sabrina Pennington, Dean of Student Affairs.

On February 10, 2004, at 7:00 p.m., Ivy Tech State College will host a second event in Wallace Auditorium at Reid Hospital. The featured speaker will be Dr. Charlie Nelms. Dr. Nelms is a former Chancellor of Indiana University East and is currently Vice President of Institutional Development and Student Affairs at Indiana University. The topic of his presentation is “Improving Education; A Collaborative Effort.” He will elaborate on collaborative efforts between home, school, community and church to improve educational opportunities for African Americans. Dr. Nelms presentation is free to the public.
“We are very pleased to be able to bring Dr. Nelms back to Richmond. His presentation will reinforce the local community’s initiatives to improve the K-16 educational process. Charlie understands the community and will share the importance of continued collaborative efforts,” said Chancellor Jim Steck, Ivy Tech State College.

Fountain City using “Good Start” to plan for future
The newly formed Fountain City Good Start committee, in partnership with the Indiana Rural Community Assistance Program (RCAP), has begun the Good Start process to plan for the town’s future. Project Good Start is a community planning process designed to identify, assess, and focus on priority issues.
A five-page survey intended to gauge community attitudes toward a variety of community services and development-related issues has been distributed by the community steering committee and staff from RCAP. The due date for the surveys is January 14, 2004. Surveys may be dropped of at the Town Hall or sent to RCAP.
The next phase in the project is to conduct a community forum. Survey results will be presented and issues prioritized.

Richmond Rotary Quiz Bowl
It’s that time of year again! Time to put together a team for the 8th Annual Rotary Quiz Bowl. If you enjoy trivia, you will want to be a part of this exciting event. Again this year, proceeds of the Rotary Quiz Bowl will go to Genesis of the YWCA. Genesis is the regional domestic violence shelter serving Rush, Franklin, Wayne, Union and Fayette counties.
The Quiz Bowl will be held on February 10, 2004 in Vivian Auditorium at IU East. Team members are requested to meet a 6:00 p.m. in the IU East Community Room for a review of the rules and the pairing of teams for competition. The quiz bowl begins at 7:00 p.m. Please encourage your family and friends to attend the competition and cheer your team to victory.
The winning team will receive $200 and the runner-up will receive $100 to use as they deem appropriate. However, the real winner will be Genesis of the YWCA. The cost of sponsorship for a team is only $100 and all money raised from sponsorships will go to the Genesis Shelter. The Richmond Rotary Club will cover the expenses for prizes and food.
Each team is permitted to have three members plus a coach and an alternate. Questions will cover history, sports, music and many other topics. Local celebrity quizmasters will pose the questions to the teams. We are looking for teams from businesses, schools and other organizations in the surrounding area.
We hope you will want to form a team and participate in this enjoyable event. The evening is light-hearted and fun for the participants--even if they do not win. Everyone has a great time.

Parks Department and Starr-Gennett Foundation to Unveil New Signs
For Immediate Release: December 23, 2003, RICHMOND, IN:
The Starr-Gennett Foundation and the City of Richmond Department of Parks and Recreation will unveil the first two in a series of five interpretive signs located along the Whitewater Gorge Trail at the former site of the Starr Piano Company and Gennett Records at a gathering on December 29, 2003 at 1:00 pm. The gathering will be held on South 1st Street at the Starr-Gennett site and is open to the public.
Parks Department Superintendent Stan Lambert, Mayor Shelley Miler, and Starr-Gennett Foundation Board President Jeff Plasterer will give some brief remarks before the unveiling. The signs were made by Kershner Signs of South Burlington, Vermont. Kershner Signs is owned by Wayne and Ruby Gibson. Ruby Gibson is the granddaughter of Clarence Gennett, who became Treasurer of the Starr Piano Company in 1905. Huffine Design of Hagerstown, Indiana donated design and layout services for the series. The remaining three signs will be displayed at the gathering and should be installed before the spring of 2004.
