Steinem, who will discuss the Empowerment of Women, is one of the most recognized voices of the modern feminist movement. Her name is synonymous with the advancement of women’s social equality in America and throughout the world.
“This is a Women’s Commission outreach project for the women of the campus and community,” stated Diana Fahl, co-chair of the IU East Commission on the Status of Women. “I hope everyone, male and female, will leave the conference with a renewed excitement and focus toward the future of what can and should be done. I also hope that there will be bonding and support developed among women of this area.”
Sandra Leek, Executive Director of the Indiana Civil Rights Commission for over ten years, will also address participants with her presentation, Are We Equal Yet? Leek is also currently director of Indiana Legal Services, a commissioner on the Social Status of Black Males and a member of the Indianapolis – Private Industry Council.

The agenda for the conference will open with a welcome by David J. Fulton, Chancellor at Indiana University East. After Leek gives her presentation, participants will choose from ten breakout speakers with topics ranging from sexual harassment to self-esteem to healthy hearts. After lunch, Steinem will address conference members followed by a half-hour question and answer session.
The conference will be held in Vivian Auditorium in Whitewater Hall on the IU East campus beginning at 8:00 am. Registration fee for the conference is $99 per person. For more information call 765-973-8203, or 800-959-EAST, ext. 203.

IVY TECH STATE COLLEGE ANNOUNCES PARTNERSHIP AWARD
Ivy Tech State College’s Business Administration Program and the Small Business Development Center Partnership will receive one of two statewide Awards of Excellence for Partnerships at the 19th Annual luncheon Tuesday, February 11, 2003 held at the Indiana Government Center in Indianapolis. The awards program is developed and sponsored with funds from the Indiana Commission on Vocational and Technical Education in cooperation with the Indiana Association for Career and Technical Education.
The Collegiate Management Assistance program at the Indiana Small Business Development Center provides free assistance for local businesses and entrepreneurs. Wayne County and South Bend, Indiana have the only programs in the state. The program brings students from local colleges together with the local businesses. Students in Ivy Tech State College’s Business Administration program were able to apply the skills they have learned in their course work to real world experiences by working with the local small businesses. The students provided practical consulting experience to the entrepreneur as they identified problem areas and opportunities and recommend plans of action in the form of written and oral reports.
“The Collegiate Management program partnership provides students the opportunity to visit a local company and gather the information needed to conduct the study,” said Gene Ayton, program chair, business administration program. “The partnership allows for a holistic approach to education.”
Division Chair for Business and Technology, Peg Terrell, is a strong supporter of the partnership. According to Ms. Terrell, “This project provided opportunities for students to utilize critical thinking, networking, and technical skills and provided opportunities for small businesses to gain an insight for making improvements to their company. The partnership encourages workforce skills, community service, and a commitment to student success.”

The Starr-Gennett Foundation and Civic Hall present the Metta Quintet form JazzReach,Inc. on Thursday, February 6th, 2003 at 7:00 p.m. at Civic Hall Performing Arts Center in Richmond. The performance will feature Stolen Moments: The First 100 Years of Jazz, an exciting multimedia presentation detailing the history of jazz in America, and a jazz concert given by the Metta Quintet. Hans Benjamin Schuman, the founder and director of JazzReach Performing Arts and Education Association and the drummer for the Metta Quintet, started the organization in 1994 to share his enthusiasm for jazz with audiences, with a special emphasis on running programs in places infrequently served by other national jazz outreach programs.
Stolen Moments is in the second year of its national tour. The program chronicles jazz roots from field hollers to ragtime, from bebop to hard bop, and from free jazz to contemporary jazz trends. Stolen Moments connects jazz history to the civil rights movement and relates its influence over other aspects of American culture. Using narration, video, and live jazz music, Stolen Moments illustrates our American jazz roots. The show highlights the lives of numerous Gennett artists, adding particular relevance for a Richmond, Indiana performance. And you get the best of both worlds! After the intermission, the Metta Quintet will perform a forty-five minute jazz set. The show will be entertaining, illustrative and educational for all ages.
Reserved seat tickets for all of this exciting music and historical perspective will be just $10 for adults and $5 for students. Tickets go on sale at the Civic Hall box office on January 13th. Patrons may order tickets from the Civic Hall box office.

The Starr-Gennett Foundation Releases Three CD Set
For Immediate Release: September 25, 2002, RICHMOND, IN:
In honor of Gennett Records’ 85th anniversary, the Starr-Gennett Foundation announces the release of “Gennett Records Greatest Hits Collection.” The “Collection” incorporates three CDs filled with original Gennett recordings and a special historical booklet. The set includes the newly-produced third and final volume of “Gennett Records Greatest Hits,” which boasts performers ranging from “Fiddlin’” Doc Roberts to Lawrence Welk.
Volumes I, II, and III of “Gennett Records Greatest Hits” and a 52-page booklet make up the “Collection.” The booklet displays some never-before-published images and details all of the selections included on each CD. Several tracks by Louis Armstrong, Hoagy Carmichael, Bix Beiderbecke, Jelly Roll Morton, and the New Orleans Rhythm Kings, among others, can be heard on the CDs.
"This CD set is a milestone in the Starr-Gennett Foundation's ongoing mission to preserve the unique and important musical heritage of Gennett Recordings," said Starr-Gennett Board President Jeff Plasterer. "This project would not have been possible without the tremendous support we receive from Sanyo Laser Products in Richmond. Once again they have been terrific. We also want to thank the Gennett family for their support and encouragement."
Richmond, Indiana’s historic Gennett Record Company recorded, pressed, and distributed some of the best early jazz, blues, old-time country, and gospel records throughout the United States in the 1920s and 30s. As a result, Gennett Records was recently featured on NPR’s program “Morning Edition” and its website as part of “Technopop,” a six-part series about how technology has changed popular music. Some of the best early jazz recorded in Richmond is included in the “Collection,” but the set also highlights several notable blues, vaudeville, and old-time country musicians. “I really love the Doc Roberts’ selection,” explains Elizabeth Surles, the Foundation’s Interim Director. “I’m a big advocate for rekindling interest in the roots of American music.” “Gennett Records Greatest Hits” CDs can be purchased at many fine stores and through the Starr-Gennett Foundation’s website, www.starrgennett.org. The month of October is a National Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
Today, across the United States, domestic violence is a serious social problem that affects many families and intimate relationships, men and women, of all age, ethnicity, sexual orientation and economic status. Statistic shows that a woman is beaten once every 7.4 seconds, amounting up to approximately 4million women becoming a victim of domestic violence each year. For children who grow up with such violence, it is a traumatic experience and also a threat to their development and wellbeing.
In honor of the victims of domestic violence and a call out to the community for an end to this cycle of abuse and violence, Genesis of the YWCA will place purple ribbons on National Road in Richmond and will be giving educational presentation throughout the month of October.
If there are any questions or request for an educational presentation, if you or someone you know needs help, if you simply need to talk, please call Genesis of the YWCA at 1-800-886-4508.
