In the archived section, someone mentioned the "Uncle Orrie" show. Any Cub Scout in the Dayton Ohio area must have been on the show at least once.
They gave you an "ice-cold Coke Cola" and a certificate for a Burger Chef hamburger.
Uncle Orrie was assisted by "Ferdie Fussbudget" played by Ken Hardin.
Great fun for a kid. On the show they of course had cartoons. My favorite was the "Funny Company".
Its the Funny Company
We're just for fun you see
So come a-runnin' when you here us call....

That's our President

And then some Indian chief lets out a fog-horn like belch and the episode begins.
I remember when Richmond had alot of Mom and Pop stores all over town. No matter where you lived you could walk to the local store. There was usally one about every three blocks. Alot of the small stores would give credit to the people in the nieghborhood. My Grandparents owned the East End variety. I can remember Parry Moore's on E street, Mary's On north 18th and Don's on 17th. Don's would let kids pass out ads for a little money. It would be nice if someone had some pictures to post of some of these small stores.
Forget the pictures. It would be nice to have those stores again! I'm only 24 but I grew up in Boston and can remember the little convienence store, hardware store, and resturant. I know I would love to be able to walk a few doors down the street to get something I needed rather than dealing with Wal-mart, Lowes, and the like. Plus like many of you have said it was a nice nieghborhood attraction. Sometimes I just wish the simple things in life were still around. Oh well I suppose those times are gone for good.
I just have a question??? We have a bit of trivia going on here at work. And we can't remember what store went into the building where Roberds was. We know Mr. Wiggs was there but was wondering what went in there after that.
A few of the places were Ames, Pamida, Piece Goods Store, Montgomery Ward, Rex and Levitz. If anyone knows please let me know. My email is jamiller@neaton.com
Thanks,
J Miller
It was Mr. Wiggs
correct answer is hecks store
I use to go to a little store on south 8th street in richmond called Paul's and I grew up on south 4th street and on the corner was a store called hirchfields,we could go there and get penny candy and a six pack carton of coke for a few cents, when the tiny diner came to town down on south 9th street by hibberd school it was a big deal for those of us at hibberd junior high school and could eat lunch there for about 35 cents. and powerhouse downtown for 10 cent hamburgers. WOW - the Tiny Diner! Talk about pulling a memory right out of the depths of my brain!
Does anyone remember the Olympia, downtown? and how about that place to the left just over the main st bridge, on the right hand side after the left turn heading towards the HS. I can't remember the name..also how about the Armory dances? I remember also being sent to the PowerHouse by my Mom to get those hamburgers..ummm umm good..lol.
Good news, Stephen! Olympia Candies is still in business...and they have a web site! You can find them in the same location on Main Street in Richmond or online, here: http://www.olympiancandies.com/.
I'm totally amazed Jane. I was there last year and i walked all over downtown, reminising of course, and i guess i missed it. But not when i return. Thanks for the link.
Happy Holidays as well..
