The basic laws(or the idea of) of the Commandments are the same laws we use at the federal and state levels. Do you really think the laws that are on our books are ones we as Americans dreamed up on our own. No. these beliefs originated with "the Bible" whether you want to believe this or not. Do you condone Rape? Thievery? how about MURDER if we eliminate the basic concepts of the bible(our preceding law book) we may as well eliminate our laws as well. We can have total anarchy! I'm sure someone will be willing to rape your daughter, kill your husbands and steal your possessions. Good luck. I own my gun.
I, personally, do not feel that the monument is causing any harm. But then, I also do not believe that any harm is caused by having our money say "In God We Trust" or with the United States President having the nation pause in prayer after the 9/11 tragedy. The majority of our meetings, feast and public events begin and/or end with prayer. Whether or not I believe in the 10 Commandments is not the issue. But please note that my Creator reigns above all and I am secure enough in my own spiritual relationship that I am not intimidated by the displays of any religion. Personally, I feel that if each person work and/or worry about his or her own spiritual relationship that they will have plenty to do.
Try to run around without God in your life & see how far you get! You are either living for the Lord or living for the devil; it's as plain as that. So if we should happen to see the word "GOD" by chance during our day then how appropriate; We must need to pray.
Look around! Can we advertise God on a monument? Well can McDonalds advertise cheeseburgers?
Would it be better if someone bought a piece of property on a Richmond street corner so they can put the ten commandments written in stone? Perhaps in front of their business. Or what about all christians build such so that everyone can see it who cruises by! Then probably we would have alot more riots like other countries. For people who don't like it believe me there are ways!
Well, of course you can advertise God on a monument. Go ahead and put one in your front yard. Buy a street corner and put it there. Put it in front of your business.
But don't ask the government to do it for you.
I can't imagine what your allusion to riots and "believe me there are ways" is all about. The violence and threats in the U.S. comes from those who want government to endorse religion.

The message on the Ten Commandments marker is not the issue. The issue is that whenever governments become allied with a religion that government eventually kills those who do not agree. Go over to Earlham where you will find a statue of Mary Dyer, a Quaker woman who was hanged on Boston Commons for not believing as the then government believed. The Ten Commandments belong everywhere except on government property. If your faith is strong then it is not necessary to impose it on others through government.
