The downtown explosions and fires of Saturday, April 6, 1968. 41 persons lost their lives. The downtown was rebuilt as a pedestrian mall known as the Promenade. It was changed back to vehicular traffic about three or so years ago.

thank yu for yur bakcground information. i guess i must explain why i actually didnt know about it. That's because i wasnt born Richmond and i havent lived Richmond. I will come to live Richmond pretty soon when i marry my boyfriend. Yesterday, i was reading Frederick's story and i thought oh my god! there was an explosion... So, i wanted to know about it. Today, i was browsing on Waynet page and i found details on the history facts item.

Well, funny thing about dates is that 6 april is my birthday, but 1968 is not my birth year. 1968 is my brother's birth year...Anyway, it was a sad terrible event for so many people to die and for so many to be injured.

You'll find a vibrant downtown (we call it Uptown now). And lots of shopping on the eastside of the city. By the way, my son was born on the day of the explosion.

I am smiling... This is nice coincidence of dates!

Not everyday u encounter an "aries6"...

I look forward to see the Uptown. I also heard of Glenn Miller.
