This place does need new buisness. There is nothing for young people to do. Thats why we are all moving away to find opportunity. Actually come to think of it Cambridge City reminds me of a retirement home.

What types of businesses would you like to have here, or what do you think is missing? What do you think would go over well here?

After reading the first 2 comments about Richmond leads me to ask.....Why don't these people offer ideas for a solution instead of just complaining? What does Muncie have that Richmond doesn't? Let's solve the problem instead of just complaining about it.

Being in a similar situation, I agree with Gizmew about the current range of activities and places for college students to particpate in and to visit. While Richmond has a standard nightlife with bars and such, it has few places to really hang out and take a load off. What few places there are (such as Charlie's) aren't well known to college students.

Too further the problem, two out of the three colleges in Richmond have no resident student population which means it is a school of commuters. Most of the people I know that attend these colleges aren't from Richmond but are from places like Winchester or Hagerstown. The only residential college is Earlham College and there seems to be a serious rift between it and the rest of the town.

It seems that consolidating the student populations through interaction would be a good start in improving the situation. Perhaps a Richmond sponsored event aimed at bringing people of college age together would be a start. Some good publicity geared toward inclusion and at the colleges may yield an interesting response.

If anyone knows of any gathering places for college students, please reply to the post. I'm intersted in seeing if I've missed any places. Have a good one.

Being a college student, I agree that there is not much entertainment for folks my age. But, I go to school in Muncie and I don't know where the first fella gets off saying Muncie has a good college life or great environment. I'm often more bored in Muncie than in Richmond, Muncie has a couple of nice bars in the village, big deal, they don't have much else except for one more coffee joint than Richmond. I think a good solution for the problem of youth boredom in Richmond is to open more places of variety, such as Charlies Coffee Bar. There needs to be more variety, thats about all.

I'd like to see an indoor rock climbing wall and some trampolines in Richmond. And maybe some bumper cars. It would all have to be indoors because of the weather. Or if someone has lots of extra money laying around an enclosed water park would be really nice. It could be used year around and a lot of handicapped people can have more freedom in the water.

Hi Sharon,

I'm happy to say we can make one of your wishes come true right away! Earlham College already has a climbing wall which is open to the general public (for a fee). It is located in the Earlham Wellness Center and is operated by the Earlham Wilderness Program.

You can learn more about the program and the climbing wall here:
http://www.earlham.edu/%7Eoutdoor/wall/index.html.

You can view a photo of the wall here:

Have fun!

I used to think Richmond was in a time warp as well. My family relocated to Texas - a huge change from the rich green scenery. The border town we now reside in is so large and unfriendly - most drivers do not even give courtesy to emergency vehicles. Richmond is a wonderful community to raise children and I miss it greatly.

Yes, Richmond is in a time warp. I call it more like " underground". When will the powers that be there ever see that they are dancing... underground and in the Dark Ages.

I've lived in Richmond for almost a year and I've frequently heard it referred to as a "time warp" but in my experience, I think it feels more like an old town in a new light. There are tons of young people here as well as young-minded people.
I think that this website is a great example. It's a space for people to discuss Richmond in tons of capacities from what's great about Richmond to changes we'd like to see. I really appreciate Sharon's comment a few above my post. She was clear about what she'd like to see in Richmond and Jane was quick to respond with a helpful answer that what Sharon would like to see is already here and available.
I think these are the connections we need to be making in Richmond. We need to be talking about what we'd like to see in Richmond, because I think we'd be surprised about what's already here. And if it's not? Then we're having conversations which is the first step to making things happen.
I, for example, think more locally-owned businesses is definitely a way to improve Richmond. I think it would help create dollars in our local economy to make it thrive instead of spending them on national chains (restaurants, stores, and other business). I would also love to see better transportation options. For Richmond to be more walk and bike friendly and ideally, even a car sharing company. There are great ways to bind the great neighborhoods that already exist, we just have to do them.

What do you guys think Richmond needs to help pull us out of this "time warp" mentality? What would you guys like to see here? Thanks!

To the mention of the serious rift between Earlham and Richmond: do you believe that having a better relationship will in some way help the current "time warp" idea?
