About the Wayne County Challenge
The Wayne County Challenge (WCC) is an annual series of distance
running races held within Wayne County, Indiana, in which points
are earned for participation and competitive achievement. The
scoring system of the WCC and the awards presented at the end of
each season are designed to encourage and reward the
participation of all types and ages of runners.
After each season, the WCC Committee hosts the WCC End-of-Season
Celebration, a fun run, luncheon and awards presentation to
honor successful runners. Awards for the Top Three Overall Male
and Female runners are presented as well as awards for Age-Group
winners, the season’s Most Improved Runner, and those who
participate in every race. Since 2003, the WCC Committee has
presented more than 40 awards at the end of each season.
Last year, the third annual Wayne County Challenge drew 1060
entries to nine races, the first time the WCC has topped the
1000-entry mark. More than 500 different runners participated in
at least one WCC race.

Each race in
the WCC is independent, with its own fundraising methods and
objectives. Proceeds generated by these races are used to
benefit Wayne County residents in numerous ways. One of the main
objectives of the WCC Committee is to maximize participation in
all of the WCC races and thereby help to maximize fundraising
for each race beneficiary. Other objectives of the WCC are
described in the WCC Committee Bylaws. (View
the By-Laws of the WCC)
There is no additional fee to be entered in the WCC series.
Entry in the WCC is automatic when a runner enters and completes
a WCC race. Points are accumulated according to the rules
described in “The ABC’s of the WCC” below.
In 2005, 17 runners conquered the Wayne County Challenge by
participating in every race. The WCC Committee invites everyone
to participate in this exciting and fun race series. While
planning your 2006 race schedule, plan to take the “Wayne County
Challenge”!
The ABCs of Wayne County Challenge Scoring
System (2006)
The WCC scoring system is designed to reward race participation
as well as race speed. Below is a link to the official
description of the WCC scoring system.
Download the complete scoring
information form.
(.pdf
file-requires the free Adobe
Acrobat Reader in order to view.)
Basically, the scoring system provides for:
- Fifty
(50) participation points
for finishing a race,
- One
age group point for each
runner placing behind you in your age category,
-
Top-five-points for
runners placing in the top 5 male or female overall. The
actual points awarded are based upon the number of runners
in the race.
Wayne County Challenge Age Groups (Male & Female)
Each season, a runner’s WCC age is defined as that runner’s age
when their first participation in a WCC race occurs. Birthdays
that occur during the season causing a change of age group are
ignored.

Frequently Asked Questions about the Wayne County
Challenge
1. What does it cost to get into the WCC and how do I
sign up?
- It’s
free! Just pay the entry fee for any WCC race, cross the
finish line, and you’re automatically entered in the WCC.
The more races you run, the more points you earn.
-
- 2.
How does the scoring system work?
- See the
ABC’s of the WCC. There are three basic ways to accumulate
points. Participate in a WCC race, place ahead of people in
your gender/age group, place in the top five overall of your
gender. You can accumulate points in 1, 2 or all 3 ways in
each race.
-
- 3.
What if I change age groups during the season? How will my
WCC points be assigned?
- Age
groups are determined near the beginning of the season. Your
age when you participate in your first WCC race of the
season is your WCC age for the entire season. Be sure to
verify your correct age group when you check the results.
-
- 4.
I’ve noticed that different races have different age
groupings. How are these differences handled by the WCC
scoring system?
- The
placings in each race are used to calculate WCC points. Your
WCC age is used for the assignment of WCC points. Age
groupings for individual races are ignored.
-
- 5.
What if no one else is in my age group?
- You win!
However, you would not receive any age group points for that
race. (This should be an incentive to invite someone of your
age and gender to participate. Just be sure it’s someone you
can beat!) You would still receive 50 participation points
for that race, giving you a big advantage over everyone in
your age group who didn’t participate and may participate in
later races.
-
- 6. If
I have a question/dispute about my WCC points, how do I get
it resolved? Who do I contact?
- You
should start by contacting the director of the race in which
your dispute originates. Race directors can be contacted by
e-mail. E-mail addresses for race directors may be found at
(http://www.waynet.org/recreation/running.htm).
- Or you
may contact the WCC Committee Chairman, Michael King, by
phone @ (765) 935-5843 or @ (765) 935-7574 - ext. 234 or
e-mail mking@odiscs.com.
-
- 7. If
I’m in the top five overall, will I still get age group
points?
- Yes.
You’ll get both top five and age group points. You also get
50 participation points.
-
- 8.
What is the Most Improved Runner Award? How is it
determined?
- This
award will be presented at the end of the year to the runner
who is determined to have made the greatest improvement in
racing speed over the course of the season. After the last
race of the year, the times run by all the runners who have
participated in at least 3 races will be evaluated to
determine the recipient of the Most Improved Runner Award.
Race times for early races are compared to times of races
run later in the season. Because direct comparisons may not
always be possible, some subjectivity in the decision-making
process may be necessary. The decision of the WCC Scoring
Committee will be final.
-
- 9.
How can I keep track of the scores? Where can I get the
latest update to the WCC standings?
- WCC
results will be posted online at
http://www.waynet.org/recreation/wcc/#results as soon as
possible after the calculations are completed. (This usually
takes 3 to 5 days after the completion of a race.)
-
- 10.
Are there a minimum number of races I must attend to be
eligible for a WCC award?
- Yes.
Participation in at least 3 of the WCC races is required to
be eligible for an award at the end of the season.
-
- 11.
What if I get injured? Is there some way I can get points
without running?
- The WCC
has made allowance for the possibility of injury during the
season. You may still earn participation points by
volunteering to help out at a race. Contact the race
director before the scheduled start time of a race,
preferably at least the day before. (The earlier you contact
the director, the better.) If the director agrees to allow
you to help out, you will earn 45 points for working the
race. This option for receiving points is available for only
one race per season.
-
- 12.
What are the awards? What do you win?
- The
awards for the winners of the WCC depend on the sponsorships
the WCC Committee can obtain. In the past, overall winners
have received personalized trophies, platters or fleece
blankets along with gift certificates. Age group winners
have received personalized plaques or mugs. Runners who
participate in every race have received certificates and
specially designed t-shirts.
-
- 13.
How are awards presented after the season?
- The
awards are presented after the end of the season at the
End-of-Season Celebration, an event hosted by the WCC
Committee. Runners who participate in at least 3 races,
along with their families or guests, are invited to the
awards presentation event that includes a Fun Run and
Luncheon held in the Springwood Lake Park Pavilion.
(See the 2003, 2004 and 2005 Wayne County Challenge Awards
Presentations.)
