How to Select and Properly Fit a Backpack

The Congress of Chiropractic State Associations (COCSA) recommends that you carry no more than 10-15 % of your body weight in your backpack. This means a 100 lb person should carry 15 lbs or less in their back pack.

  1. Most backpacks either rest too high or too low on a child’s back.

  2. Choose a backpack designed to shift the weight off the shoulders to the low back and hips.

  3. Load your backpack with your normal amount of weight. This enhances the body’s natural ability to carry weight.

  4. Adjust the straps at the top and the bottom for a two point fit. The straps should also adjust side-to-side to create an ideal fit across the upper back.

  5. “AirPacks” backpacks are designed with an adjustable air-filled lumbar cushion.

  6. The “AirPacks” backpack is fit correctly when the air-filled cushion rest in the small of the back.

  7. Walk around with the pack on to make sure the backpack has balanced, comfortable fit.
